With a permanent population of under 1,000, this small harbor town punches well above its weight in charm, water access, and things to do.
Sailors have known about Oriental for decades. The harbor is dotted with sailboats year-round, and if you’ve ever wanted to get out on the water, this is the place to do it. Several local outfitters offer sailing charters and kayak rentals for every skill level.
The waterfront itself is worth an afternoon on its own. Grab lunch at one of the marina-side restaurants, browse the small local shops downtown, or just find a spot on the dock and watch the boats come in. Oriental doesn’t rush you — that’s the point.
Anglers will find some of the best inshore fishing in Eastern NC right off Oriental’s shores. Red drum, flounder, and speckled trout are regulars in these waters, and local guide services can put you on fish whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned angler.

Croaker Festival
Oriental’s biggest event of the year, held the first weekend of July. Expect a hometown parade, live music, food, kids games, a small boat regatta, and fireworks over the harbor. 2026: July 3rd
The Old Theater
A restored small town theater in the heart of Oriental hosting live music, community performances, and local events. A cozy stop for a bit of culture during your visit.
Oriental Town Dock
A free public dock right on the harbor, popular with boaters passing through. A great spot to watch the sailboats come and go in the self proclaimed Sailing Capital of North Carolina. 2026: August 7-8
Dragon Boat Races
Held each fall on the harbor, this lively community event brings teams together for a day of paddling, competition, and waterfront fun.
Pamlico County Historical Museum
A small museum showcasing the maritime and small town history of Oriental and Pamlico County, worth a visit for anyone curious about the area’s roots.
Neuse River Waterfront
